One of those spots can be found at the Montour Preserve in the Fossil Pit! The site is open from dawn to dusk all year and visitors can keep all the fossils they find. The state park covers 695 acres in central PA and is filled with oak and pine forests and also Halfway Lake. The lake features a sandy beach with swimming area and concessions. There is also an environmental learning center, playground, and amphitheater. Be sure to check out the Rapid Run Nature Trail for an easy 1 mile hike with the kids not far from the beach.
